Timbuktu

Well here I am in Timbuktu (or Tombouctou as the locals say). Now I feel like I have been to the ends of the earth and Timbuktu! It is really a desert here, the sand is very different to else where in Mali, here it is more white sand, just like a really nice beach, except we don’t have the water.

We have a nice house here, no furniture except for 3 plastic chairs, but we have carpet on some of the floors! We also have an air conditioning unit in our house, but haven’t needed to turn it on yet. We were all thinking that it was about 25 degrees C outside during the day and we were just really feeling the heat but then we found out that it is up to 37 degrees! By the time we leave it will be well into the 40’s, not too sure how well I will cope with that!

It is amazing how things can become normal that would usually be extreme. When we first arrived in Mali and saw kids laying in the dirt and rubbish I thought how disgusting it was. And when we got to Douentza and were playing outside with the kids we would squat rather than sit in the dirt. But it only took us a few days before we were all sitting in the dirt and donkey poo with the kids. And even the garibu boys that we were working with, they smell so bad and are so dirty but we picked them up and hugged them anyway.

Ok well I should be off, hope you are all enjoying yourself as much as I am.

Hi Bec
the whole church is praying for you here, it's wonderful that you are making a difference and enjoying it by the sounds of things. I love the pictures, how about some more of you?It must be so different from Norway but you sound as if you are really taken with Africa. I'm praying constantly that God protects you from any 'nasties' and that you have an awesome time luv, angels and blessings Helen W
